You snap your lunch, Cal AI returns 410 calories in a second, and you feel pleased — it's so quick. Then you realize it's 2 p.m., that was the first thing you've eaten, and you've had the same dull nausea since yesterday's shot. The photo was easy. Making sense of the day wasn't.
A quick note: this page is written by the team behind Holt. Cal AI details come from its App Store page and website, checked on November 1, 2026.
Why does a photo calorie counter fall short on a GLP-1?
Cal AI is built around one very good idea: point your camera at food and get the numbers without typing. Its listing walks you from answering lifestyle questions to building a plan, then snapping a meal for a nutritional breakdown. Calorie counters like this were built for a familiar goal: eating less.
On a GLP-1, the hard part often flips. Appetite can drop sharply after a dose, so the question becomes whether you ate enough — especially protein and fiber — and why some days feel worse than others. A calorie total can't answer that, and neither can a food log on its own.
We couldn't find GLP-1 features on Cal AI's listing or website: no dose log, no medication levels, no side-effect tracking. Its website lists calories, protein, carbs and fat from a photo; fiber isn't listed.
Why do GLP-1 users switch to Holt?
Because Holt keeps the photo and adds the medication around it.
- A scan that counts fiber. Holt estimates calories, protein, fiber, carbs and fat from your plate. That matters on a GLP-1 — constipation is one of the common side effects the Wegovy label lists.
- Meals on your dose-day timeline. Every meal sits next to your shots, so a light-eating stretch after a dose step is easy to see.
- Side effects with a strength. Severity sliders for nausea, constipation, heartburn, food noise, suppressed appetite and fatigue, plus your own.
- Shot day, handled. Reminders, a Live Activity, an estimated medication-level chart and Otto suggesting your next injection site.
- A report for your appointment. A doctor-visit PDF covering 30 days, 90 days or your full history, with suggested questions.
What changes when you switch?
Your photos start telling a story. In Cal AI, each meal is a number toward a daily total. In Holt, the same photo lands on a timeline with your last dose and how you felt — so "I barely ate on Thursday" connects to "Thursday was the day after my shot."
Your home screen changes too. Holt's summary puts protein, fiber and water next to calories, each with a goal, so eating too little is as visible as eating too much.
What you'd give up: Cal AI's Android and Apple Watch apps, its depth-sensor portion estimates and barcode scanning. Holt is iPhone only for now. On price, Cal AI's listing says food scanning results require a subscription; Holt is free to download, with some features in an optional subscription.
Should you stay with Cal AI?
Stay with Cal AI if:
- You use Android or want logging on your Apple Watch.
- You only want calories and macros, as fast as possible, and track your medication somewhere else.
- You're not on a GLP-1 and eating less is genuinely the goal.
If the camera habit is what makes tracking stick for you, that habit carries straight over to Holt.
What we'd track in your first two weeks with Holt
- A photo of every meal, even small ones, checking protein and fiber.
- Every dose and its site, so the level chart and next-site suggestion work for you.
- Side effects with a severity, on shot day and the two days after.
- Water daily, against the goal on your home summary.
- A doctor-visit report before your next appointment.
Whichever app you use, it records what you ate and how you felt. Questions about your dose or eating targets belong with your prescriber or a dietitian.
